Last week the ‘Natura 2000 in Bulgaria – New Horizons’ team along with volunteers from the Green Balkans Volunteer academy and our partners at the ‘Trakiya – Plovdiv - 2008’ community center visited the ‘Rodoliybie’ club at the ‘Bratya Miladinovi’ secondary school in Plodviv.
The event was initiated by the ‘Trakiya – Plovdiv - 2008’ Community center and Ms Hristina Kamenova – manager of ‘Rodoliybie’ club. Our team presented interesting facts about bats and cetaceans and the students learned new and intriguing things, like how many mosquitoes can a Common Pipistrelle eat in a single night, how are bats different from rodents and how do scientists listen in on bats. The Green Balkans volunteers from our Volunteers Academy presented all of this and much more as a final step from their participation in the Academy. Martin Georgiev, a young enthusiast from the 11th grade who takes active part in our activities, told the students about the Megachiroptera suborder and how they are different from bats in Bulgaria. And Denitsa Kancheva, a future ecologist from the ‘Paisii Hilendarski’ University in Plovdiv, presented the short-beaked common dolphin – how to distinguish it and how it is unique among cetaceans in the Black sea.
The children from the 1st to 3rd grades learned about the threats to cetaceans in the Black sea and what it’s like to be a marine explorer.
To support the young explorers among them we gave them the ‘Adventures of Darki the bat’ booklets and the newest from the Green Balkans editions – ‘Sea, biodiversity, ecology’. All children received a book divider with protected species in Bulgaria.

About Natura 2000
Natura 2000 is the largest coordinated network for nature conservation. More than 30% of the territory of Bulgaria falls within the scope of the network - 120 areas for the protection of wild birds and 234 areas for the protection of natural habitats.
Bats
33 from the 35 species of bats in Europe can be found in Bulgaria. They are of key importance for ecosystems. All bat species are protected by the Biodiversity Act, and the forest and underground habitats of the species are protected within the Natura 2000 ecological network.
Cetaceans
There are 3 species of cetaceans in the Black Sea - Bottlenose Dolphin, Short-beaked Common Dolphin and Harbour Porpoise, endemic to our sea. Persecuted in the past, not much is known today about the state of the populations of the three species. The Bottlenose Dolphin and the Harbour Porpoise are subject to protection by the Natura 2000 ecological network and special marine protected areas are declared for their protection.
