On the 8th May, a bit earlier than the official date, we celebrated the event at the ‘Trakiya - Plovdiv - 2008’ Community Center with the students from the ‘Bratya Miladinovi’ primary school.
We started off the celebration with a talk about the sea - what it gives us and what is life inside it like, why are there marine Natura 2000 zones and what we do to protect seas and oceans in Europe as well as worldwide. We also talked about dolphins - how many species of dolphins are there in the Black sea and what it is like to be a marine explorer - on a yacht, or a plane or just from the sea shore.
And, of course, there was time to play - the children worked with plasticine and created their own sea haven, the children also made ‘ocean’ tiaras and other decorations with sand and seashells, while others assembled jigsaw puzzles with dolphins..In the end we arranged a beautiful exhibition with watercolor pictures, created by the children, in the center’s yard. All pictures were with maritime themes. Finally, the kids had some energy left to ‘clean’ the seaside from litter with some fishing rods in a game we had prepared for them.
All children received textile bags and a notebook, provided by the EC, and the ‘Natura 2000 in Bulgaria - New Horizons’ project team gave everyone information materials and “The adventures of Meriyem and Fanny the Dolphin” book.
The 2019 initiative is under the patronage of the EC and includes 134 events throughout Europe and 7 in Bulgaria.
The event is part of the Green Balkans National Campaign celebrating the European Natura 2000 Day - 21st May. Our organization is celebrating the Natura 2000 day with a series of events throughout the country in May - month of the Natura 2000 network.

European Maritime Day
On the 20th May we celebrated the European Maritime Day - an initiative that started back in 2007 aiming to raise the public awareness on marine importance and marine industry, as well as promote the creation of European maritime identity. This day, dedicated to the sea, promotes the good management of coastal areas, seas and oceans by all citizens and interested stakeholders.
Natura 2000
Natura 2000 is the largest coordinated network for nature conservation. More than 30% of the territory of Bulgaria falls within the scope of the network - 120 areas for the protection of wild birds and 234 areas for the protection of natural habitats.
Cetaceans
There are 3 species of cetaceans in the Black Sea - Bottlenose Dolphin, Short-beaked Common Dolphin and Harbour Porpoise, endemic to our sea. Persecuted in the past, not much is known today about the state of the populations of the three species. The Bottlenose Dolphin and the Harbour Porpoise are subject to protection by the Natura 2000 ecological network and special marine protected areas are declared for their protection.
