At the beginning of the week our team visited the students at the ‘Otets Paisiy’ primary school in the Dink village. The Natura 2000 in Bulgaria – New Horizons team was just as excited as the children for our meeting. We had even come with a few volunteers from our Volunteers Academy :)
Aneliya from the Green Balkans team presented the organization and its activities, the different programs we work on and how important it is to protect Bulgarian nature and protected areas, like those included in the Natura 2000 network, whose purpose is to ensure the prosperity of both humans and nature and in particular the Reka Stryama SCI.
To celebrate the Month of the Cetaceans, our volunteers, Katerina and Lachezara, who study ecology told everyone about cetaceans in the Black sea and we do to protect and study them. They also explained about protected arias along the Black sea coast, part of the Natura 2000 network.
All students received book separators with photos of protected species in Bulgaria to help them study and remember what they promised: to celebrate the Black Sea Day – 31 October next year. They all sent us and even recited some of the verses they were preparing for the next month celebrations at the school!

Natura 2000
Natura 2000 is the largest coordinated network for nature conservation. More than 30% of the territory of Bulgaria falls within the scope of the network - 120 areas for the protection of wild birds and 234 areas for the protection of natural habitats.
Cetaceans
There are 3 species of cetaceans in the Black Sea - Bottlenose Dolphin, Short-beaked Common Dolphin and Harbour Porpoise, endemic to our sea. Persecuted in the past, not much is known today about the state of the populations of the three species. The Bottlenose Dolphin and the Harbour Porpoise are subject to protection by the Natura 2000 ecological network and special marine protected areas are declared for their protection.
