On 27 and 28 October we celebrated the Black Sea Action Day with several presentations of BLACK SEA WATCH project “Black Sea Marine Environment Research With Public Participation” to students and schollchildren at Burgas, Pomorie and Nessebar. First we vistied the students in ecology at Prof. Dr. Asen Zlatarov University in Burgas on 27 October. We have presented both Green Balkans Research and Conservation Program for Black Sea Cetaceans and our latest development with Turksih Foundation TUDAV – BLACKSEAWATCH.ORG website and mobile app BLACKSEAWATCH. The features and functions of the modern tools turning us into amateur scientists of Black Sea biodiversity were thoroughly demonstrated. The follow up discussion raised number of issues and threats faced by inhabitants of the Black Sea ecosystem and how hard it is to keep the fragile balance of it.
Nest day – 28 октомври – was turn of the younger generations to be introduced to the modern tools developed in the project. In the morning we visited Hristo Botev Primary School at Pomorie town where we were expected by enthusiastic group of 7 and 8 grade schoolchildren. To celebrate the Black Sea Action Day we have prepared a presentation describing specific features of the Black Sea and threats and problems for its inhabitants and the entire ecosystem – invasive species and their impact on local fauna, pollution, overfishing and depleted fish stocks. Discipline and attention demonstrated by the kids during the presentation and how quick these were in realizing the connections in the Black sea ecosystem were impressive. Mobile app and the website BLACKSEAWATCH.ORG produced within the project were demonstrated. Children were introduced to main functions of the application for registration of user, submitting information with location and pictures for observed flora and fauna species, creation of map with reported findings, catalogue of species included in the applet.
During the afternoon we continued towards Ecology Department of Nessebar Municipality who have invited us for the event they were organizing at Lyuben Karavelov Secondary School at Nessebar town to celebrate the Black Sea Action Day – 31 October. About 60 kids in 3 and 4 grade listened to the lecture on inhabitants of the Black Sea and threats for these posed mainly by human activities – water pollution, invasions of alien species due to human negligence, overfishing. The children were fascinated with the use of their favourite smart phones and tablets as tools for study of Black Sea biodiversity. Some started immediately to download the app and register. Each of the kids got a copy of the children book published within the project “The adventures of Meriyem and Fanny the Dolphin” added to the presents prepared by Ecology department of Nessebar Municipality.
T-shirts and children books by BLACK SEA WATCH project were handed to Children Complex Burgas for the awards in the children phot and picture competition “The sea is not for one vacation only”.
