On 3 September 2014 in the area of one of the unguarded small beaches at Ravda village a case of live stranded dolphin was registered. Worried citizens informed the competent authorities for the case – Nessebar municipalities and RIOEW-Burgas – which reacted timely. Support by Green Balkans NGO experts was sought whom joined the rescue action. It turned out that the distressed individual belongs to the species Black sea common dolphin (Delphinus delphis ponticus) that was at the beach for the past 3 hours. At the site it was discovered that citizens have tried to help the dolphin and twice they have supported it in an effort to bring it to open waters. Unfortunately the marine mammal has returned to the coast and that raised the urgency of calling in experts.
Due to a good fortune at the beach there was a natural rock formation in the shape of a water pool where we found the dolphin placed by the volunteer rescuers. General physical examination was made that showed the condition to be satisfactory. Flesh wounds around the mouth have been registered caused according to information by eyewitness by rocks and strong waves. Great curiosity of all holiday makers on the beach has caused additional stress for the distressed marine mammal. Through joint efforts with the inspector of RIOEW safety perimeter was secured to allow calmness. Dorsal fin and back were watered regularly to avoid drying out of the sensitive dolphin skin. When it was assessed that the marine mammal has recovered its strengths and has overcome the stress cause by tens of curious holiday-makers willing to photograph or just to touch it new effort was made to bring it to its natural environment. The dolphin was brought from the natural pool to the sea at an improvised stretcher of a towel and additional support for its head and tail. Thanks to two volunteers possessing good swimming skills it was towed to deep water where it confirmed its recovery and with two strokes of its powerful tail fluke it has swam in open sea. In this way that emergency situation has finished with a happy end!
We would like to express special thanks to colleagues of Nessebar municipality, RIOEW-Burgas and the caring citizens who have helped for the saving of the distressed dolphin! The executed activities have been a good example for collaboration by municipal and state authorities, NGO and citizens. We would like to appeal to all citizens when they witness similar situation to respect the instructions by competent authorities and to keep off the safety perimeter so to assure calmness for the distressed marine mammals. We would like to remind you that dolphins though being loved by many people are wild animals and close encounters with humans are a source of stress for them that only magnify the critical state that they are in at such emergency situations!
