Our story begins a few months back when Aneliya Penkova from ‘Prikazka bez krai’ – a place for reading kids in Sofia contacted us. Educaton on nature and ecology is set into the children's educational program which is why they asked us for information and materials on the red-breasted goose, a rare and protected species, wintering in our country. We sent them many information materials along with ‘The adventures of Brent, the red-breasted goose’ book and promised to come visit them.
We were surprised and very happy when the children sent us their continuation to Brent’s story which they have also illustrated with beautiful pictures. Check them out in the file below :)
The Green Balkans team would like to thank the children and their teacher for their wonderful work, showing us we are not alone in our dream to protect nature and educate children as well as adults on nature conservation.
So at the end of May we finally visited the kids and told them more about the Black sea and cetaceans in it. Aneliya and Poli from the ‘Natura 2000 in Bulgaria – New Horizons’ project team, along with their inflatable helper – a dolphin model, went to Sofia to meet the young nature lovers.
We had prepared a short video clip to tell children more about dolphins and everyone were very interested to learn more about these lovely creatures. Poli told them more about the Green Balkans work on protecting and also studying cetaceans in the Black sea and also about the dangers they face. The older children surprised us with the many facts they knew about these marine mammals. We took a photo together and bid farewell. And promised next time to talk about bats.

Natura 2000
Natura 2000 is the largest coordinated network for nature conservation. More than 30% of the territory of Bulgaria falls within the scope of the network - 120 areas for the protection of wild birds and 234 areas for the protection of natural habitats.
Red-breasted Goose
The Red-breasted Goose is a globally endangered species, protected within the Natura 2000 ecological network. Bulgaria is an important country for the protection of the species - almost the entire world population spends the winter in the region of Primorska Dobrudzha.
Cetaceans
There are 3 species of cetaceans in the Black Sea - Bottlenose Dolphin, Short-beaked Common Dolphin and Harbour Porpoise, endemic to our sea. Persecuted in the past, not much is known today about the state of the populations of the three species. The Bottlenose Dolphin and the Harbour Porpoise are subject to protection by the Natura 2000 ecological network and special marine protected areas are declared for their protection.
