This Wednesday we met our friends - the children at the ‘Rodina’ Library to talk about cetaceans in Bulgaria.
The children got to meet the three cetacean species that inhabit the Black Sea and learn about their biology and ecology as well as the threats they face and what we do to protect them.
Two of the three species – the Bottlenose Dolphin and the Porpoise are included in the Red Data Book of the Republic of Bulgaria as Vulnerable and are also under the protection of the Natura 2000 ecological network.
We told the children about the new app BlackSeaWatch (http://blackseawatch.org/) which allows us to import data about any cetaceans washed ashore. This way everyone can join our efforts to help cetaceans in the Black Sea.
We finished our date with a fun game about species in Bulgaria.

Natura 2000 is the largest coordinated network for nature conservation. More than 30% of the territory of Bulgaria falls within the scope of the network - 120 areas for the protection of wild birds and 234 areas for the protection of natural habitats.
About Cetaceans
There are 3 species of cetaceans in the Black Sea - Bottlenose Dolphin, Short-beaked Common Dolphin and Harbour Porpoise, endemic to our sea. Persecuted in the past, not much is known today about the state of the populations of the three species. The Bottlenose Dolphin and the Harbour Porpoise are subject to protection by the Natura 2000 ecological network and special marine protected areas are declared for their protection.
