It was 1930 when our country first celebrated the Bulgarian Nature Day, and in 1970 the USA officially started celebrating the Earth Day. Nowadays, the event involves over 192 countries and over a million people under the motto to protect nature and take better care of it.
This year the Green Balkans team started the Earth Day celebrations early and joined the ‘Ivan Vazov’ National Library, Plovdiv, Children’s Department in the yearly ‘eco-happening’. Together we welcomed the children from the ‘Sveti Konstantin – Kiril Filosof’ and ‘Patriarh Evtimii’ secondary schools at the library’s conference room.
Since this year’s celebrations are dedicated to the conservation of species, we told everyone more about the Red Book of Bulgaria and the species it includes. The kids met Liybka, the sandwich tern model, whose live cousins they can see at the Pomore Lake, and listened about dolphins in the Black sea. Brent, the red-breasted goose model, helped us take them to distant Siberia, and the Griffon vulture, Nelson’s story took us far to Yemen. Nelson turned into a kind of a superstar after it was accused of spying in Yemen. You can find out more about the vulture’s story here.
After that we even had time to make our own rare species’ decorations and play interesting games such as the ‘owl and mouse’ game where children learned how hard it is for animals to find food in nature.
