The results from the necropsy of the marine birds and mammals found near Shabla and Durankulak are now available

On March 20, 2026, the team of the Wildlife Rescue Centre of Green Balkans responded to a distressing report of dead wild animals found along the Northern Black Sea coast. As previously reported, more than 300 Mediterranean shearwaters and 9 marine mammals were discovered in the area of Shabla and Durankulak. Veterinary specialists from the Rescue Centre and Trakia University conducted thorough examinations, and the results are conclusive: the animals died as a result of entanglement and drowning in fishing nets while feeding.

An international workshop was held within the framework of the EOL project

An international workshop within the framework of the EOL project brought together experts, civil society, and local institutions from three countries - Bulgaria, Greece, and Turkey - in Istanbul. Together, they discussed the gaps in their national legislation and initiatives regarding environmental and ocean literacy. Relevant solutions and changes were proposed to meet the contemporary needs of society and adapt the work of the countries to the best global practices in this regard.

Trainings in environmental and ocean literacy continue within the framework of the EOL project

Our mission to increase the environmental and marine literacy of young people in Bulgaria continues. On September 11 and 12, we visited Burgas and Varna – International Youth Center and Technical University, respectively. There, together with students, teachers and young people, we discussed the problems of marine ecology and the Educational Program on Environmental and Ocean Literacy in the Black Sea. Over 40 attendees learned about the peculiarities of marine ecosystems that they had not heard of before, told in turn their own experiences related to the sea and showed us that young people are interested in the fate of nature – a guarantor of their future.

Dissemination training on environmental and ocean literacy for the team of the International Youth Centre - Stara Zagora

Yesterday, we visited the team of our long-term partners, the International Youth Centre - Stara Zagora. Together we dived into the depths of nature conservation and more specifically of the blue part of our planet – seas and oceans – with a focus on the Black Sea.

Ocean literacy training in Ahtopol

The main goal of the event was to provoke young future scientists to think about the role of the sea and wild ecosystems in our lives and why it is important to protect them.

The trainings were for municipal employees and brought together representatives of various institutions in Shabla and Burgas. In Shabla, the Green Education Center - Shabla was the host. Results of a study of cetacean bycatch in Bulgarian waters of the Black Sea

Last week, the international organization Environmental Investigation Agency published a new report on the deadly impact of cetacean bycatch in the waters around Europe. The report’s conclusions and recommendations show that despite legal protection, all coastal European countries are failing to adequately protect cetacean populations in their waters from bycatch. The study also covers the waters of the Black Sea, where the harbour porpoise is the most affected species and bycatch levels are a significant threat to the good conservation status of this endemic subspecies.

Together with the Barbatus Student Ecological Club, we conducted another training in environmental and ocean literacy

On May 7, a Green Balkans’ team visited the Barbatus Student Ecological Club in Stara Zagora. The club brings together young adults who share a common passion for nature and actively participate in activities related to its conservation. The goal was to conduct training in environmental and ocean literacy for young adults, which is carried out within the framework of the EOL project.
