We conducted the first marine environmental literacy training for youth

After the first "Training of Trainers" on marine environmental literacy for the Black Sea successfully concluded last week, on March 20 in Burgas we also held the first training for young people aged between 18 and 35. The training included participants in the IX National Conference "Ecological Thinking for the Future", organized by the Department of Ecology and Environmental Protection of Burgas State University "Prof. Dr. Asen Zlatarov" at the Cultural Center "Morsko kasino".

The first training of trainers within the EOL project, which took place in Greece, has been completed successfully

The first training of trainers within the framework of the EOL project took place from 10 to 14 March in Thessaloniki, Greece. Representatives of the NGO sector and local institutions from the three partner countries in the project – Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey, took part in the first of two such trainings. The aim of the training is to prepare the participants to conduct meetings with young people, to whom the idea of ​​ocean literacy will be presented, why it is important for each of them to recognize the cause of protecting the marine ecosystem as their own and, in turn, to set an example in this regard among their surroundings.

A new project of Green Balkans has started aiming to increase maritime literacy

One of the most significant obstacles to the conservation of Black Sea ecosystems is the lack of understanding from the society on the importance of such activities. The vulnerability and threats to marine life have become clichés that do not reach people in the right way. Green Balkans' newest project, Environmental Education and Maritime Literacy in the Black Sea Basin (EOL), aims to address this very problem. The EOL project is dedicated to changing the way we teach knowledge about the sea, so that it reaches not only the minds, but also the hearts of people, provoking empathy for the problems of marine ecosystems.

Survey of the number and distribution of cetaceans in the Bulgarian Black Sea water area in September

The extremely windy weather in spring and summer this year prevented our team from conducting expeditions to study the numbers and distribution of cetaceans along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast during these seasons. Instead, a period of relatively calm weather offered September. Of course, we immediately took advantage, and from September 23rd to 27th, association experts covered pre-determined transects in the 12-mile zone and collected unprecedented data on the distribution and abundance of our marine mammals in September.

Marine adventures with Green Balkans in Muzeiko

On July 13, a Green Balkans’ team visited Muzeiko, Sofia, to introduce children to the science of marine ecosystems and its most charismatic inhabitants - dolphins. But we were not at all prepared for the hospitality, enthusiasm, excitement and exploratory spirit of young and adult science fans. And together with the curious visitors we set off on a sea adventure.

Black Sea Day at the Burgas School and Children's House "Célestin Freinet"

At the end of October, the Private School "Célestin Freinet" and a children's house attached to the school celebrated Black Sea Day in many ways: through discussions about the protection of the sea, quizzes, familiarization with the flora and fauna, cleaning of the beach next to the school, and at the end week and with a traditional Carnival of the Sea Dwellers.

Participation of Green Balkans at the International Meeting on Bycatch of Vulnerable Species

From October 4 to 6, Malaga (Spain) hosted an international meeting on bycatch, in which representatives of the Green Balkans took part. The focus of the meeting was mainly on the current state of technical facilities being developed to deal with bycatch of various vulnerable groups of organisms (cetaceans, birds, sharks, corals, etc.) worldwide. Challenges related to the development and implementation of bycatch reduction programs in different locations around the world and types of fisheries were also highlighted. The meeting was attended by technical experts and scientists from around the world carrying out activities to monitor and reduce bycatch levels.

Celebrating the World Whale and Dolphin Day in Stara Zagora

Our friends at the Zahariy Knyazhevski Regional Library, Stara Zagora invited us on the 25th July to celebrate the World Whale and Dolphin Day. On the 23rd July 1982 the International Whaling Commission voted for a complete ban on commercial whaling for the period 1985-86 and since has been celebrated as the World Whale and Dolphin Day.
