This year too we conducted a spring expedition to study dolphins in the Bulgarian territorial waters of the Black Sea. It took place between May 31 and June 5. Poseidon was also on our side, and the conditions for observation were excellent all the time. Our team was able to cover all pre-determined transects in the shortest possible period and collected an unprecedented amount of data on the distribution and number of the marine mammals.

The annual meeting of the ACCOBAMS Scientific Council was held in Monaco from November 22 to 26 under the motto "Because cetaceans can't be silenced". The event also coincides with the 25th anniversary of the Agreement on the Conservation of Cetaceans in the Mediterranean, the Black Sea and the Adjacent Atlantic area. The meeting was also attended by representatives of the Green Balkans NGO, an official partner of ACCOBAMS, presenting the activities related to dolphin research in the Black Sea – bycatche monitoring and implementation of measures to mitigate its impact, study of number and distribution of populations of Black Sea species and their health status.

On 26th October 2021 a workshop dedicated to bycatch mitigation measures in the Black Sea was held in Constanta, Romania. The event was organized by Mare Nostrum NGO in the frameworks of CONCETA “Strengthening the EU-Turkey Civil Society Cooperation for the CONservation of CETAceans in the Black Sea“ project and took place in National Institute for Marine Research and Development “Grigore Antipa”. Main beneficiaries of the workshop were representatives of the Sinop Fishermen's Cooperative, Turkey, Sinop University, Administration of Sinop Province. Dr. Victor Niță, head of the Marine Living Resources Department of NIMRD and Dr. Mădălina Galațchi presented aquaculture development and pilot study on monofilament gillnet use in Romania.

CeNoBS project, the largest European project on the abundance of cetacean species in the Black Sea, has come to an end. The project lasted for a period of 30 months and involved partners from 5 countries, including Romania and Bulgaria. CeNoBS included the first large-scale aerial monitoring in the Black Sea, workshops and trainings, as well as the proposal of benchmarks for the indicators of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive and other initiatives at local, regional and international level to help when achieving the project objectives. CeNoBS is an international project coordinated by Mare Nostrum NGO and with the participation of Green Balkans. The final results of the project were recently presented in hybrid workshops, attended by representatives of national authorities.

Studying animals that live in an environment radically different from ours is not an easy endeavor. Green Balkans’ experts, who have dedicated their time and effort to the study and conservation of cetaceans, spend days at sea in often severe and changeable conditions - in wind and cold, in heat and sun, with an indefinite length of working day. But as aquatic animals, dolphins do not spend much time on the surface, and this, among other obstacles, makes encounters with them extremely rare and unpredictable. As a result, the practice of satellite tracking of individuals has become established worldwide. The method allows to collect data on migrations of the species, their preferred habitat, seasonal distribution and even on some parameters of their behavior.
