On 18.06.2023 (Sunday), a presentation was held at the Pomorie Lake Visitor Center.
The presentation was about cetacean mammals in the Black Sea and bats in Bulgaria. Aneliya Pavlova, coordinator of the "Natura 2000 in Bulgaria - New Horizons" project, presented interesting facts about marine mammals, as well as the hidden life of bats, to the residents and guests of Pomorie. The participants were very interested and we had many follow-up questions. The time of 1 hour was not enough and we promised to meet again at the Visitor Center, but on a different topic about species from Natura 2000. All participants received informational materials about cetaceans - the children's book about dolphins, as well as a board game about marine life.

Cetaceans in the Black Sea
There are 3 species of cetaceans in the Black Sea - the abalone, the common dolphin and the porpoise, which are endemic to our sea. Persecuted in the past, not much is known today about the status of the populations of the three species. The abalone and the porpoise are protected by the ecological network Natura 2000, for the protection of which marine protected areas are declared.

There are 33 species of bats in Bulgaria, all of them are protected by the Biodiversity Act, and their refuges are protected within the Natura 2000 ecological network.
Natura 2000
Natura 2000 is the largest coordinated network for nature conservation. More than 30% of Bulgaria's territory is covered by the network - 120 protected areas for the protection of wild birds and 234 protected areas for the protection of natural habitats.
