We’d like to inform you that we are extending our art competition dedicated to cetaceans in the Black Sea. Due to the great interest we are extending the competition until the 29th December!
Dear artists,
we’d like to invite you to join our art competition and learn new facts about cetaceans in the Black Sea.
Considered to be one of the smartest species in the world, a lot of people don’t know dolphins are actually mammals, which feed their young ones with milk and raise them, just like we do. They also use echolocation for orientation.
Black Sea is home to three species of Cetaceans – the Common Dolphin, the Bottlenose Dolphin and Porpoise, unique for our biodiversity. Although they were widely distributed once, today not a lot is known for their populations.

We challenge all young nature lovers to share their creativity and show us how they see Cetaceans.
Create a picture or digital art – digital picture, a short video or animation of up to 2 minutes and send it to us until 29th December 2021 to Green Balkans at №1 Skopie str., Plovdiv, or at office@greenbalkans.org.
Conditions for participation - categories and age groups.
Categories:
Drawing – A4 format or bigger, classical material (graphics, watercolor, pastel or paint);
Digital art – digital drawing, short video or animation up to 2 minutes.
Age groups:
I group – 12 – 15 years old;
II group – 16 – 18 years old;
III group – over 18.
We will be waiting for you creations for the world of Cetacens!

- Mincho Todorov – drawing
Mincho Todorov is an artist with over 20 years experience. His works include sculpture and woodwork, including plastic arts as well as various objects from natural materials. He is also managing the ‘Sunny Children’ Children Centre art academy and is organizing the first large exhibition of the academy – ‘Children Works’.

- Petya Karpuzova – drawing
Petya studied ‘Pedagogy and fine arts’ at the ‘Neophit Rilski’ University, as well as ‘Biodiversity, ecology and conservation’ at the ‘Paisii Hilendarski’ University in Plovdiv. She aims to join the two spheres to achieve a better understanding of nature and biodiversity through art. She is a volunteer at Green Balkans as well as our collegue under the first project for the reintroduction of the Lesser Kestrel in Bulgaria.
- Vanya Angelova – digital arts
Vanya studied Ecology in the Plovdiv University and has been interested and keen ornithologist. She has also devoted herself to digital arts and animation while also raising her children. She has worked on children books for rare species, a birds of prey identifier and various other information materials.
- Ivaylo Gotov – digital arts
Ivaylo is a keen leeder with a passion for engineering, design and technologies. He studied ‘Print design’, 'Pedagogy of Fine Arts’ and 'Digital Arts’. He teaches art and design, has participated in various art workshops in Bulgaria and abroad. He has worked and lived in Washington, Vienna, Vancouver, Seatle and has worked on various innovative projects for different companies. Currently is part of the SAP Labs Bulgaria team.
- Galina Meshkova – drawing and digital arts
Galina is an expert ecologist, specializing in marine biologiy with over 10 years of experience working with marine birds and mammals.
All participants will receive a certificate for participation and the winners in the first 2 age groups in both categories will receive special prizes:
1st place – a dolphin bag, travel mug and buff scarf and information materials;
2nd place – travel mug and buff scarf and information materials;
3rd place – travel mug and information materials.
The prize for the third age group – over 18, will be a participation in a dolphin expedition in the Black Sea, part of our conservation program for Cetaceans in the Black Sea.
Our jury will also choose one piece from both categories – drawing and digital art who will also be able to join the dolphin expedition.
***The dolphin expedition is carried out from a small sea vessel by the Green Balkans team and volunteers and will be held in 2022.
All winners will be invited to take part in some of our events and all works will be shared on our website, the ‘Natura 2000 in Bulgaria – New Horizons’ project webpage and the Cetaceans in the Black Sea specialized webpage as well as on our Facebook and Instagram pages. The best digital works will also be shared on our multimedia projector at the side of the State Opera in Stara Zagora.
The art competition and all awarded works will be shared through our media partners – Darik Radio, Hobby Tv and Economedia.
We’d also like to use this opportunity to invite all professional artists who may have been inspired by our work with dolphins to join the initiative and share their work in any genre, form and style. You can also donate your creations for our various information materials, your work will help us reach new audiences and interest them in nature and the protection of these species.
