Studying animals that live in an environment radically different from ours is not an easy endeavor. Green Balkans’ experts, who have dedicated their time and effort to the study and conservation of cetaceans, spend days at sea in often severe and changeable conditions - in wind and cold, in heat and sun, with an indefinite length of working day. But as aquatic animals, dolphins do not spend much time on the surface, and this, among other obstacles, makes encounters with them extremely rare and unpredictable. As a result, the practice of satellite tracking of individuals has become established worldwide. The method allows to collect data on migrations of the species, their preferred habitat, seasonal distribution and even on some parameters of their behavior.
This method has not been applied in the Black Sea so far. We have the opportunity to conduct the FIRST SUCH HISTORICAL STUDY IN OUR SEA, and you have the chance to become the reason for it to happen by donating funds in the campaign we have launched - https://platformata.bg/en/kauzi/1296:5613-2021-08-11-06-35-03/details/campaign.html?fbclid=IwAR2CFa83pIP1KeSuyDaro5y0uzbWXXfeHykcjHa9g7nn92HO5wLrL-HQvjU. In this way, together we can help these charismatic animals, without whom our sea will not be the same.

And why is this necessary?
The Green Balkans team has been taking care of the conservation of dolphins in the Black Sea for more than ten years. This includes collecting data on their populations - abundance, density, distribution, collecting data on mortality and threats, studying the conflict with fishermen and society's attitudes towards them. The protection of nature in general, as well as of each species, goes first through their detailed understanding. That is why a lot of work is needed, which must be done before we can effectively protect the dolphins in our sea.
Dolphins in the Black Sea are among the least studied marine mammals in the world. For many years, no one found it necessary to explore anything at sea at all. The interest was focused mainly on the resources that are extracted. Some movement in this direction has been observed only in the last decade or two, but the difficulties in our country traditionally are more than the opportunities. And in order to accumulate qualitative data, which can be used for analysis of the situation and subsequent implementation of adequate measures, it is necessary field surveys to be conducted regularly, seasonally and comprehensively.
Help us learn more about dolphins so we can protect them effectively!
