On 12th of May we visited Shabla as a part of the tour of Green Balkans and friends dedicated to NATURA 2000. The event took place thanks to the cooperation of the Municipality of Shabla, Ecology Department, the Ezerets Place and Shabla Municipal Children Complex.
The exhibitions for NATURA 2000, the Red-breasted Goose and the bats were placed on the Central Square and on our stands we solved puzzles with questions about the species.
Our guests were the students from Shabla Municipal Children Complex. We took them to a tour through the exhibitions, providing them important information about the species. We used the models of the Griffon Vulture, the Sandwich Tern, the Lesser Kestrels and the Red-breasted Goose. In order to strengthen the knowledge about the species, we played several team games including the NATURA 2000 board game, which everybody received, together with information materials.
Our good friends - the students from “Sv. Kliment Ohridski“ Primary School, Durankulak, joined the event later and together we had several presentations and games about the species.

Natura 2000
Natura 2000 is the largest coordinated network for nature conservation. More than 30% of the territory of Bulgaria falls within the scope of the network - 120 areas for the protection of wild birds and 234 areas for the protection of natural habitats.
Red-breasted Goose
The Red-breasted Goose is a globally endangered species, protected within the Natura 2000 ecological network. Bulgaria is an important country for the protection of the species - almost the entire world population spends the winter in the region of Primorska Dobrudzha.
Bats
33 from the 35 species of bats in Europe can be found in Bulgaria. They are of key importance for ecosystems. All bat species are protected by the Biodiversity Act, and the forest and underground habitats of the species are protected within the Natura 2000 ecological network.
Vultures
There are four species of vultures in Europe - Griffon, Black, Egyptian and Bearded Vulture. All of them are strictly protected by Bulgarian and European legislation. As rare and valuable species, they fall under the protection of the European ecological network Natura 2000. Bulgaria is home to only three of them – the Griffon, Black and Egyptian Vulture. The Bearded Vulture - a symbol of Bulgarian nature protection is considered extinct from the country.
Cetaceans
There are 3 species of cetaceans in the Black Sea - Bottlenose Dolphin, Short-beaked Common Dolphin and Harbour Porpoise, endemic to our sea. Persecuted in the past, not much is known today about the state of the populations of the three species. The Bottlenose Dolphin and the Harbour Porpoise are subject to protection by the Natura 2000 ecological network and special marine protected areas are declared for their protection.
