On July 13, a Green Balkans’ team visited Muzeiko, Sofia, to introduce children to the science of marine ecosystems and its most charismatic inhabitants - dolphins. But we were not at all prepared for the hospitality, enthusiasm, excitement and exploratory spirit of young and adult science fans. And together with the curious visitors we set off on a sea adventure.
We told the children about the unique features of the Black Sea, about its inhabitants, about the methods by which we study it, as well as the measures we can apply to preserve it for future generations. We have gathered all this data over the years thanks to the support of the Swiss Foundation OceanCare and the Agreement for the Conservation of Cetaceans in the Mediterranean, Black Sea and Adjacent Atlantic Ocean (ACCOBAMS).
The interesting facts of the life and biology of the cetaceans in the Black Sea caused great curiosity. The kids literally flooded us with a wave of questions and demonstrated a solid base of knowledge accumulated during their visits to Muzeiko.
Muzeiko was created on the model of children's science centers in the USA, taking into account the results of the latest studies on child development and the learning process in children of different ages. The project is of the "America for Bulgaria" Foundation. And in 2022, the Foundation donated "Museiko" to the Municipality of Sofia. Every year, thousands of children gather here and develop an interest in science and nature conservation.
We are extremely happy that we had the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the magical world of science and ignite a research spark in children. We thank the Muzeiko team for the invitation. We hope to continue to show young minds together that science is cool!
