At the end of October, a team from Green Balkans virtually visited the students of Hristo Botev Primary School, accompanied by Mrs. Elena Simova, their teacher.
The young nature enthusiasts started their own eco club, and Anelia from the 'Natura 2000 in Bulgaria - New Horizons' project greeted them with a presentation about dolphins (cetaceans) in relation to the upcoming Black Sea holiday.
We had previously sent them informational materials, and thanks to Mrs. Simova, they received handcrafted badges with the Green Balkans logo. At the end of the lesson, the students engaged in the familiar game of broken telephone, but this time with the theme of Black Sea inhabitants.

We are celebrating 25 years since the adoption of the Strategic Plan for the Black Sea by all the Black Sea countries, whose essence is the limitation of threats to the environment and biodiversity of our shared sea. On October 31, 1996, the representatives of the six Black Sea countries - Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania, Russia, Turkey, and Ukraine - officially adopted measures to combat marine pollution.
Cetaceans in the Black Sea
Three species of cetaceans are found in the Black Sea - the Common Dolphin, Bottlenose Dolphin, and Harbor Porpoise, all endemic to our sea. In the past, these species were hunted, and today not much is known about the populations of the three species. The Bottlenose Dolphin and Harbor Porpoise are protected under the Natura 2000 ecological network, which designates marine protected areas for their conservation.
Natura 2000
Natura 2000 is the largest coordinated network for nature conservation. Over 30% of the territory of Bulgaria falls within the network, including 120 protected areas for the conservation of wild birds and 234 protected areas for the conservation of natural habitats.
