On 26th October 2021 a workshop dedicated to bycatch mitigation measures in the Black Sea was held in Constanta, Romania. The event was organized by Mare Nostrum NGO in the frameworks of CONCETA “Strengthening the EU-Turkey Civil Society Cooperation for the CONservation of CETAceans in the Black Sea“ project and took place in National Institute for Marine Research and Development “Grigore Antipa”. Main beneficiaries of the workshop were representatives of the Sinop Fishermen's Cooperative, Turkey, Sinop University, Administration of Sinop Province. Dr. Victor Niță, head of the Marine Living Resources Department of NIMRD and Dr. Mădălina Galațchi presented aquaculture development and pilot study on monofilament gillnet use in Romania.
Dimitar Popov of Green Balkans NGO presented results from 3 years of bycatch monitoring during turbot gillnet fishing in Bulgaria. Special attention was paid on the findings from testing different models of acoustic deterrent devices (pingers) in that fishery that is posing highest risk for cetaceans due to bycatch. Additional technical advice on operation of PAL pingers was provided by their designer Prof. Boris Culik of Germany. These devices were tested in past two years in Bulgaria and helped to achieve 77.5% overall decrease of bycatch and now their trials in Sinop, Turkey will be conducted within CONCETA project.
